1. The girls, Running Bird and Bright Morning, talk about how they need to escape from their captors. They decide once the captors are sleeping, and they'd escape at dawn.
2. The girls didn't bother to run away because they knew the Spainiards would kill them and they would be way faster then Running Bird and Bright Morning could run.
